Daniel Storms Broadway
Rave reviews from New York about the opening night of new play 'A Steady Rain' and 007 star Daniel Craig's debut performance on Broadway have led to speculation in Britain that the Bond star might be able to transfer the play to London after it finishes its U.S. run in December.
Craig, who stars alongside 'X-Men' actor Hugh Jackman, has received high praise for his performance as hard-drinking Italian-American cop Joey in the powerful police drama by Keith Huff. The gritty play chronicles the disagreement and major clash between two Chicago cops. The opening night saw a star-studded crowd descend on Manhattan's Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, and the appearance of Craig and Jackman was greeted with loud and enthusiastic cheers. According to press reports, at the after-show party, Craig responded to questions about the possible transfer of the hit-play to London: "I really don't know. I'd like to. We'll see".
Veteran theatre critics in America have written gushing reviews of Craig's beguiling role on stage, calling him "a genuine discovery for Broadway" and noting how Daniel completely disappears inside the character of Joey, giving a "superb" performance.
Meanwhile, another fan of Craig's, Ukrainian star Olga Kurylenko (who played Camille in 'Quantum of Solace'), has also offered strong praise of Craig both as an actor and as a 'grounded' human being who has not allowed fame to go to his head. Profiled in the London Evening Standard's 'ES' magazine, Olga commented on her time on set with the 007 star: "I think that in his everyday life he's quite normal, not some crazy f---ed-up person. He's clean, smart, down-to-earth. He lives a normal life. He's not some crazy guy who invented a story for himself because he can't cope with reality".
During the course of the ES interview, Olga revealed that she completed her part in the new film 'Centurion' in March this year, alongside Dominic West and Michael Fassbender. The Greco-Roman blockbuster is set to be the biggest 'sword-and-sandals' epic since 'Gladiator' and is due for release in February 2010.
