Bond and Beyond in Full Swing
at the NFT
The British Film Institute’s Cubby Broccoli centenary season, ‘Bond and Beyond’, being held at the NFT on London’s South Bank, is in full swing as it enters its second month of screenings and special events. A ‘Bond Weekender’ was held over 1-3 May, and fans have also enjoyed the unique opportunity to see Bond on the massive screen of the BFI’s IMAX cinema nearby.
Apart from further screenings of the Bond movies, other events at the NFT during May will include a screening of ‘The Living Daylights’, with Maryam d’Abo in a live Q and A session, a must-see for all Dalton fans and those interested in Maryam’s thoughts on membership of the unique ‘Bond Women’ club; a screening of ‘Moonraker’, with the original ‘Jaws’ himself, Richard Kiel, in a live Q and A (Kiel was so popular in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ that Cubby Broccoli decided the seven foot two inch actor would be given another bite at the role); and Sir Ken Adam in conversation with Sir Christopher Frayling. Sir Ken was instrumental in giving the Bond movies of the 1960s and 70s their unique design style, especially the lairs of the various villains. Sir Ken also had a distinguished career as a German fighter-pilot for the RAF in the ‘Battle of Britain’ in 1940, and has worked with a range of other famous film-makers, including Stanley Kubrick.
Full details of these events are available from the BFI/NFT website. On 28th May, the ever-popular third official James Bond will return to the South Bank, after his surprise appearance at the special screening of ‘Dr. No’ which started the BFI Broccoli season. However, although ‘Sir Roger Moore in Conversation’ is now fully booked, fans can still catch Sir Roger in his own words. A radio version of Moore’s autobiography, ‘My Word Is My Bond’, read by Sir Roger, is currently being transmitted on BBC Radio 2 in Britain on Friday evenings. Always with a knowing twinkle in his eye, 82-year old Sir Roger recently told the BBC ‘Radio Times’ magazine: “I’ve lied all my life. The trouble is you have to remember what you’ve said!”.
